FASFAA Spring Conference Service Project:

Community Connections of Jacksonville has been serving the needs of homeless and low income women, children and families in Jacksonville since 1911. The Community Connections Davis Center is home to 150 homeless women, most of whom have children. These women come from various life situations: domestic violence; fragile underemployed economic situations; aged-out of Foster car; homeless veterans.
They receive wrap around services that allow them to re-gain self-sufficiency and independence- emotionally and financially. Community Connections is a hand-up rather than a hand-out program. The moms are required to have jobs while living at the residential facility. Additionally, they take parenting classes, financial literacy classes and either GED classes or they attend the local community college on scholarships.
The Early Learning Center cares for the pre-school children of these women in residence. It also provides pre-school for the children whose parents live in emergency homeless shelters in the area. That center alone cares for and nurtures 85 homeless pre-school children each day; provides after school programming including homework assistance, tutoring, organized sports, leadership classes and computer classes for another 100 homeless school-aged children on a daily basis
