ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY: The Office of Financial Aid is responsible for coordinating and administering all student financial assistance awarded to USF students, in compliance with Federal State and Institutional regulations and guidelines. The office is the main point of contact for all financial aid program information for current and prospective students and parents. The office is responsible for: coordinating and managing the awarding and disbursement of over $400 million in financial aid funds on an annual basis- interpreting changes to federal, state and institutional regulations and translating the effect/impact to students and parents in a manner they can understand, particularly first generation students- providing an array of financial aid support options for students and their families- and providing oversight to monitor the entire process to ensure institutional compliance with federal and state laws and regulations.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Financial Aid Advisor interprets changes to federal, state and institutional regulations in financial aid and translates the impact to students and parents in a manner they can understand, particularly to first generation students. Analyzes and authorizes changes to the need analysis calculation, exercises professional judgement to determine if an adjustment to data affecting aid eligibility is required. Demonstrates detailed knowledge of all aspects of the financial aid process, financial literacy, eligibility issues, and possible exceptions for extenuating circumstances. Provides individual counseling services in person and by phone to current students, prospective students, and parents. Presents financial workshops for students, staff, parents and the community at large.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Counsels current and prospective students including their parents on various options regarding financial aid, budgeting, and resource planning. Advises students at the front desk and in private offices, including phone and email. Anticipates and resolves problems which may delay the disbursement of financial aid funds. Independently interprets federal, state, and institutional policies and procedures. Researches and resolves student and parent complaints, concerns, and questions. Intervenes when necessary to provide problem-solving and additional assistance when necessary. Reviews, analyzes and evaluates requests for professional judgment exceptions, appeals, petitions and adjustments to the need analysis results and award packages. Reviews student files through federal verification, processes federal aggregate loan borrowing limits and determines student eligibility conducting various processes.

Collaborates and coordinates processing and awarding of scholarships including organizing the Scholarship Committee. Provides information on scholarships to the campus community.

Develops and presents outreach activities for the office, which includes, but not limited to presentations at orientation, admissions recruiting events, high schools, information sessions, and open house events.

Researches and formulates responses to phone, email and written correspondences from students, parents and the community, Performs other duties necessary to assist during peak periods and during periods of staff shortages. Collaborates with internal and external departments to conduct financial aid business and promote a team environment.

Intake, scan, and index financial aid documents to the document imaging system (BDMS).

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
This position requires a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field with a minimum of one year of experience in advising or related academic functions within higher education.

PREFERRED:
Master's degree and one to three years in financial aid and customer service experience. One to three years of experience in Title IV Financial Aid and supervision proficiency.
