Since 1989, Family Renew Community has been a lifeline for families with children in Volusia and Flagler Counties, empowering them to move from homelessness to stability. The organization was founded on a core belief: housing is only the first step toward independence. Beyond providing safe, stable homes, Family Renew delivers the tools, education, and support necessary for families to achieve lasting self-sufficiency.
At the center of this mission is a transitional housing program that allows families to stay rent- and utility-free for six to twelve months. During this time, parents work closely with case managers while engaging in wraparound services that remove barriers and restore dignity. These services include:
• Financial literacy for budgeting, debt reduction, and savings.
• Parenting education to strengthen families and create stability for children.
• Life skills coaching for confident decision-making and household management.
• Nutrition education to promote healthier choices on limited budgets.
• Employment readiness support such as résumé writing, uniforms, licensing, and transportation.
• On-site food pantries and essential item closets at every campus, providing groceries, diapers, hygiene products, and household goods so families can meet basic needs while focusing on long-term goals.
• Educational advancement opportunities, developed through partnerships with local organizations, offering GED preparation and certificate programs that foster growth, open career pathways, and expand workforce options.
With four campuses and 40 transitional housing units, Family Renew Community serves more than 220 individuals each year—about 150 of them children. The results are powerful: 94% of families who complete the program successfully transition to permanent housing, breaking generational cycles of poverty and homelessness.
Community support plays a vital role in this mission. Family Renew sustains its work in part through its thrift store, The Secret Attic, in Ormond Beach. The store not only provides quality, affordable items for the community, but also generates funding for Family Renew’s programs and creates meaningful volunteer opportunities.
From food pantries to employment coaching, from childcare vouchers to certificate programs, Family Renew Community meets families where they are—helping them overcome immediate crises while building the skills and confidence to achieve lasting independence. For the children in these families, it means stability, opportunity, and the chance to grow up believing in a brighter future.
